Android : android eclipse easiest and most secure way for username/password authentication

I am making an android app in eclipse and i was wondering, what's the easiest and most secure way of implementing username/password authentication to protect user info?

i'm still pretty new to android programming so i'm not exactly sure if i only need hash and salt for protecting password.
