Android : Identify background and foreground data

I am using DDMS Network Statistics to track the network traffic in an app that I should maintain. From time to time I have strange peaks in background data, which I can not identify with the help of the logcat. Is there a way to clearly identify which methods/classes cause which background/foreground traffic? This would be really helpful.
