I am a sociologist, my friend is a computer scientist (we both have PhDs). We have been arguing on this for a long time and I would appreciate your insights on this:
I say, no matter how much research UI designers do, they can not find an "OPTIMUM" design that suits everyone; therefore app designers should give a lot of options to allow users customize the app's interface (colors, backgrounds, sizes, changing orders of information in the app, deciding on what to be shown and what to be hidden, etc). My friend says, app designers should find a simple optimum UI and should NOT allow customization as giving too many options to users make them confused and dissatisfied. This question gets more complex when we are talking about mobile apps (rather than e.g. developing a software for a bank); there is less screen space and app users are more diverse with different levels of education and computer expertise.
How do you guys find a balance or tackle this issue?
